My daughter recently found several necklaces on Pinterest with 398.2, which represents Fairy Tales in the Dewey Decimal system. She has always been a big fan of these stories, but has a renewed interest from her favorite show, Once Upon A Time.
I was able to make this necklace for under $6! All the supplies were purchased at Hobby Lobby on sale.
Supplies needed:
- Pendant- I used this mini mirror pendant from the Fairy Tale collection. It had a removable back and worked perfectly.
- Chain necklace
- Jump ring
- Vellum paper- Mine, shown below, had a pattern, but you could use something clearer to show the mirror more.
The first step is to print out 398.2 on your paper. I used several fonts, colors, and sizes, ending up with a printed page full of choices. I also traced over the font with a blue colored pencil to darken it a little.
Remove the mirror from the pendant and trace it over the number on your paper. Cut out the number, place it over the mirror, and seal in the back of the pendant.
Attach the chain necklace to the pendant with the jump ring.
This is a fun, easy to make, and economical gift for girls of all ages who love the magic of Fairy Tales!
UPDATE: I gave this to my daughter last night for an early Valentine’s Day gift and she loved it! When I came to add this update, I saw her cute comment below with the screen name Candace’s Favorite Child :). Here is the picture she took wearing the necklace that she posted on her social media accounts:

Not only cute, but with secret literary code as well! Completely sneaky and totally cool. Coming soon to a neck near me! :p
Love it, LuAnn :)! I hope your neck gets one soon!
I love it! Much better than any of the Pinterest ones, thanks mom!
I’m so glad you love it sweetie!! Great screen name :)… Love you!!
I love this! =0) Pinned it for later.
Thanks for the pin, Kim! I hope you get to make one :).
This is a really affordable piece of jewelry to make and it’s really cute.
It was a great deal! I didn’t even know everything was on sale until I got to the counter. That is always a nice surprise :).
So cute!
Thanks Deborah! You have some cute jewelry as well :)!
So cute! I always love seeing others create. I have never tried making jewelry. This is so cool. Now, my preteen would get a kick out of this.
Thank you, Sharon! It would be a fun, quick craft to do with your preteen. I always love creating with my kids.
LOVE this! Seeing you at Inspired Mondays made me realize that I read this post on Wed when the boys were at orchestra reh but did not have time to comment!
Absolutely gorgeous necklace, but in addition, how clever to have the DDS call number on it?
Love!
Take care, friend and thanks for sharing
Thanks, Chris! My daughter actually discovered the DDS call number. I would have never thought of it :). Always great to see you, my friend!
This is so cute!. It’s great for those who love fairy tales.
I think the show Once Upon A Time is what rekindled my daughter’s love for fairy tales. She has even got my son watching it now :). Thanks for visiting, Heidi!
