My son is obsessed with the game Minecraft. I saw these cool creeper shoes on Pinterest a couple of months ago by Nikerbocker. The tutorial there is for white shoes. I found some black ones for less than $6, so I decided to find a way to turn them into creepers too…
Supplies:
- Solid color Vans-type shoes
- Green, White, and Black fabric paint
- Paintbrushes
- Waterproof spray to seal paint
- Painter’s tape or Silhouette cutting machine and vinyl
Steps:
- Cut thin strips of painter’s tape and create a pattern as shown in the picture to the right. I used my Silhouette Cameo Machine {affiliate link, Disclosure}. I created a grid in the software, cut it on vinyl material, and attached it to the shoe.
- Mix the white and black paint for a gray shade. Add white to the some of the green paint so you will have two shades of green. If you would like 3 shades of green, add black to some as well. Paint in the squares, alternating colors.
- Peel tape or vinyl off shoes. I was in the process of filling in the lines between the squares when my son walked in and said he loved them just like they were. You may want to fill in the black lines.
- Spray shoes with waterproof protector after paint is completely dry.
Update: These Minecraft shoes are great for “kids” of all ages. My 22-year-old daughter took them over when my son outgrew them!

Adorable! Your son must LOVE these! My kids were both heavy into MC but the obsession seems to have passed for now. I really like these!
Candace, do you have any simple, cute,no frills ideas for an activity or craft for a doctor Who party? My older son had a DW theme last year when he turned 12, all the kids were older than him so honestly…they sat around, talked, danced and roasted marshmallows….It was May.
In a few weeks, my younger son will be having his bday and he would like a DW theme as well….I have the invit, food, decor taken care of…favors too. I have a few simple things for them to do when they get here…glow in the dark start/planet tattoos, eye patches they can wear and lasers( glow sticks) they can wield ( from episodes of the show) But I think I need an activity too and the only things I’m finding online are really elaborate or require knowledge of DW, such as trivia games….Not sure if you are a DW fan, but if so and you know of something cute and simple, that’d be awesome! One friend suggested “Don’t Blink” freeze tag ( Don’t blink is a classic line from an ep) which is an awesome idea….I might actually just sit back and let them eat, talk, dance and hang out…I don’t know if I really need to plan too too much.
Thanks Candace!.Bc you;re so crafty, even if you are not a fan, you might have a craft/activity up your sleeve from a recent party of yours! You never know!
Take care and enjoy the day!
Candace
Thanks, Chris! He loved them and already wore them all day today.
I know nothing about Doctor Who. I haven’t even seen one episode. The Don’t Blink freeze tag sounds really fun! I think you are right about not planning too much. It seems like every time I plan a lot of activities, we never finish them. Last year, my son led all his friends in origami projects at his party. It was hilarious- my little old man :)… It was a Pokemon party so they made origami characters. By the time they finished that activity, the cake, presents, and a building board game, the party was over.
In case your son is an origami fan, I googled “Doctor Who origami” and quite a few projects came up. If anything else comes to mind, I’ll let you know!
Chris
Candace,
Great idea on the origami! He IS a lover of origami..so if I can find a nice, easy one, he can lead the group or whoever wants to try and the rest can hang out, roast marshmallows, etc…..Are you on FB? B/c I have a few pics there of my older son’s 10th bday party which was a pokemon theme…we made a pokeball cake. very easy! I hardly post pics on FB any more now that i’m blogging.
Thanks for the idea!
Take care and enjoy the evening.
Candace
I had a feeling he might like origami. He sounds a lot like my son. I don’t really use Facebook anymore either. I will check out those pics whenever I get on it again. I hope your party is a success!
Jennifer @ My Sweet Sanity

These are really cool. I’m thinking about creating this design on a pair of flats.
Candace
That sounds so cute Deauna! I had some people mention their girl Minecraft fans when I shared this on Google+. I would love to see yours! Stop by and let me know if you make them so I can come see :).
krista
My boys would go crazy for these!! I’ll have to hit Walmart and see what I can find! LOL while I was writing this my 11 and 5 year old looked over my shoulder and have both requested a pair!! “Those are AWESOME!” is their official opinion!
Candace
Love it!! I am so happy to hear your boys approved of them Krista! They will make great Christmas presents for them if they can hold out that long.
Diana Rambles
Very cool!
Candace
Thanks Diana! Lots of great stuff at your Pin Me Party this week, as usual :)!
Paulette
Love this idea – thanks so much for sharing! I just made a template in Cricut Craftroom and I will try cutting that out on their plastic stencil material. I think I could use the grid all the time for scrapbooking stuff. Son’s birthday is next week and this would be a great present.
Candace
I think a plastic stencil would be awesome Paulette! My son grows out of shoes so quickly. These won’t last a month. I hope your son has a great birthday and loves his shoes!
Angie G.
These are super cute. My children have not played this game yet, but my next door neighbor’s son is obsessed. I am your newest Twitter and Pinterest follower – thanks for co-hosting. Look forward to seeing more.
Candace
Thanks Angie! The game is wildly successful. I would guess your kids will eventually find their way to it. I will be sure to return the follows!

I have made these for my son for Christmas (he is almost 14 & a lover of MC), I will pin a picture of how they turned out once they are dry! Feel free to take a peek on my ‘things I have made board’, thanks for the idea x
Candace
Hi Steph, They turned out great! I connected with you on Pinterest :). I’m so excited for your son. He will love them!
Tami @ Curb Alert!
Candace, my son has the same jacket and LOVES it! I’ve definitely have to make these shoes for him. Thanks for sharing!
~Tami
Candace
I ordered that jacket a couple of years ago for his Halloween costume. They couldn’t even keep those jackets in stock at the time because they were so incredibly popular. He wears it constantly! Let me know how your shoes turn out :).
Billie
I thank you so very much for this post!!!! My 8 year old nephew is having a minecraft birthday party next week. The thing is that he has a vast array of all things minecraft, since that is the only thing he ever asks for when ever any gift time rolls around. He will go nuts for these, not only because they are super cool, but also because he will be the only kid at school who has a pair. Not to mention his lucky Aunt Billie (that’s me) won’t have to spend oodles of money to get him an awesome present. We are trying super hard to make this party very special, as the adorable little fella has a rough year with his health. I found some tonight in gray, which should work (fingers crossed). I will send you a pic of the finished product. You’ve saved the day Candace!!!! You rock!!!!!!!
Candace
You are so welcome, Billie! I hope your nephew loves them! You are going to be the coolest Aunt ever, showing up with these. I’m sad to say my son has outgrown his, but his 20-year-old sister has taken them over now :). I think the gray should work out great. Definitely send me a picture!
candace
what kind of paint do I use or is there a kind that will last longer
Candace
I used Apple Barrel paint that noted fabrics as an acceptable material on it. I also sprayed them with a waterproof sealer. He didn’t really wear them for that long because he was in a growth spurt and outgrew them quickly :(. They held up really well though during the period he wore them.
Myra
Hello,
I came across your project on pinterest while searching for Minecraft things for my son. He would love these shoes!!! I am planning to make this for his birthday. I have the old Silhouette SD machine which I never quite mastered. Would you mind letting me know how you create a grid for cutting? I’ve only cut bigger shapes.
Thank you so much!
Candace
Hi Myra, I wish I still had the template to share with you. My husband made it for me and I forgot to save it. He just used basic lines to create a criss cross pattern. I think the boxes were about a half inch. I hope that helps some! I’m still learning how to use my Silhouette too :).
