Thanks to a cable outage a few months ago, my son and I started a mild obsession with Ted Talks. Have you ever found yourself spending an obsessive amount of time watching these informative speakers? If not, here are a few great ones to get you started. Each of these relate to one of my favorite topics around here—food addiction.
A Simple Way to Break a Bad Habit by Judson Brewer
On any typical day, we are working in a pattern of trigger, behavior, and then reward. Judson Brewer teaches how being mindful of the negatives (chemical taste, how it makes us feel…) while eating can help us become disenchanted with that chocolate cake that keeps calling us back to it. I love the concept of mindfulness and how it relates to addiction so this Ted Talk was definitely one of my all time favorites.
Why Dieting Doesn’t Usually Work by Sandra Aamodt
This talk covers reasons why dieting is not the best route for our bodies, including how our inner thermometers work in choosing our weight. She discusses the difference between intuitive eaters and controlled eaters, sharing how to live less diet-obsessed and more intuitively. You will learn how to improve health and longevity even if the weight is not coming off and some fantastic tips to share with daughters and other young people in your life.
The final video is actually a TEDx Talk but I wanted to include it as well. She covers sugar addiction specifically which is one of my biggest struggles.
Confessions of a Sugar Addict in a Sugar-Laden World by Laura Marquis
Laura shares her story of becoming a sugar addict and the 3 keys that helped her find freedom. This short video teaches several important thoughts we all need to take to heart such as “real food is our medicine and fake food is our poison.”
I hope these talks serve you well in your food addiction recovery. We can do this!
